Description
Energetic quarks and gluons produced in a hard collision eventually shower into collimated sprays of hadrons (jets) surrounded by soft radiation. Soft radiation inside the jet is often a source of contamination, because it is sensitive to other jets and the initial state. This sensitivity is introduced through a shift of the jet axis in the transverse plane (recoil) and becomes particularly relevant when measuring transverse momenta relative to the jet axis. A strategy to mitigate this effect is using an alternative, recoil-free jet definition. I will discuss the status of this line of research, its relation with jet grooming, and present examples of phenomenological applications.
