Description
KALYPSO: linear array detector with continuous MHz read-out rates
The linear array detector KALYPSO [1] has been developed for the measurement of 1-dimensional spectral or spatial distributions with continuous read-out at MHz frame rates for electron bunch or photon pulse diagnostics. The detector system is a collaborative effort between the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), University of Lodz, and DESY.
The current front-end version comprises a Si strip sensor with 256 pixels of 50 µm pitch and two GOTTHARD [2] ASICs from PSI. An FPGA-based carrier board has been developed which connects the KALYPSO detector to the back-end electronics in MTCA.4 standard. For photon pulse synchronous read-out, the clock and trigger signals from the timing system, i.e. X2Timer, are used at the European XFEL and FLASH. The detector system has been integrated into the DOOCS control and DAQ system for control and data storage, respectively.
KALYPSO has been installed at the variable line spacing (VLS) grating spectrometer [3] at FLASH1 to record the single-shot resolved spectra of the FEL pulses at 1 MHz read-out rate. In addition, results from electro-optical diagnostics obtained at the European XFEL and ANKA will be presented. A short outlook on the next version of KALYPSO will be given.
