Description
The development of ionisation tracking detectors at the heart of particle detectors has continuously been improved over many decades. Present day experiments at modern colliders demand high rate/radiation capability and/or low mass or both, demands that benefit much from the rapid progress in micro processing technologies, electrical and mechanical. The talk will cover - on a didactic level - the tasks and goals of tracking detectors. It will address gaseous and semiconductor ionisation detectors and their physics in the context of different operation environments. Modern development directions will be touched. General principles and ideas shall have preference over technical details.
