Description
The South Pole Telescope (SPT) has completed its third year of operation. Measurements utilizing the cosmic microwave background (CMB) to map the distribution of galaxy clusters vs. redshift can yield information on Dark Energy. Precision measurements of the CMB power spectrum at small angular scales are also being performed. Excellent observing conditions combined with a large-scale bolometer array utilizing superconducting transition edge sensors and a novel multiplexer operating at 0.25 K make this one of the most sensitive experiments of its kind. The talk will give a summary of the cosmology goals, the detector science and implementation, and describe working conditions at the South Pole.
