Description
The SPring-8 has started operation in 1997, and is celebrating the 10th anniversary this year. Toward the next generation light source, a new project has been launched: X-ray free electron laser (XFEL) based on the principle of self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE). In the first half of this talk, the current status of the project will be overviewed together with the recent experimental results of the 250 MeV test accelerator, in which lasing at 49 nm has been observed last year. In the second half, recent activities for undulator development are reported, especially advances in the magnetic-measurement technology. They are quite important not only for the XFEL undulator but also for the cryogenic undulator concept, a new undualtor scheme toward shorter magnetic period.
