Course description:
At a basic level, a PhD is about developing the skills of a professional academic researcher. However, without a set syllabus to follow, how do you develop those skills? In this course, we will focus on the vitally important and challenging key skill of writing in your second language. Like research, it requires different approaches at different times, depending on the specific task to be performed.
In this course you will take the time to think about and explain the concepts and/or key parts of your argument in order to be able to structure them in clear English.  You will learn methods to improve your skills and cope with the demands of a long-term writing project.

The aim of this training is to:
  • become a better academic writer by developing writing skills in English
  • focus on writing clearly and linking ideas
  • fine tune introductions and conclusions
  • improve writing proficiency by clarifying distinctions in language and grammar
  • reduce the number of persistent language errors

The course is reserved for doctoral and postdoctoral researchers of the PIER Helmholtz Graduate School and its coorperation partners CUI, EMBL and IMPRS-UFAST. Postdocs and PhD students from other graduate programmes in the PIER reserach fields may also participate upon request. Newcomers are welcome.
