This tutorial is aimed to provide a non-expert audience an introduction into the basics of phase noise and phase noise measurement techniques, state-of-the-art RF oscillators and an overview of control theory for PLL's. Furthermore, the lectures will provide a comprehensive introduction into the dynamics of fiber lasers which serve as master oscillators in next generation optical synchronization systems, as well as the optical stabilization techniques necessary to achieve long-term stable femtosecond synchronization.The IRUVX-PP project is supported by the European Union under FP7
