Description
The advent of XUV and X-ray FELs opened new possibilities to study ultra-fast phenomena in matter on femtosecond time scale. In order to exploit the ultra-sort pulse duration of FEL pulses, different
techniques have been developed to determine temporal overlap between FEL and optical laser pulses, measure their relative arrival times, and based on a cross-correlation technique determine the FEL pulse duration. These techniques opened the pathway to investigate the ultra-fast solid to solid phase transition in diamond.
