Description

The European X-ray Free-Electron Laser Project XFEL in Hamburg has been progressing since the signature of the Memorandum of Understanding for the Preparatory Phase by the representatives of 13 countries. The Technical Design Report, resulting from the collaboration of hundreds of scientists throughout the world was completed in July 2006.

Four Workshops taking place in 2005 and early 2006 in Hamburg, Paris, Copenhagen and in Oxfordshire had provided input from the scientific community on the scientific case and the instrumentation issues, especially concerning detectors. This resulted in 15 proposals for experimental stations described in the Technical Design Report.

The purpose of the First European XFEL Users' Meeting is threefold: – inform the community on the status of the project – review and update the scientific perspectives – discuss the priorities for the construction of the ten initially foreseen experimental stations in four Working Groups.
