Description
In the past 15 years the H.E.S.S. collaboration has intensively surveyed the inner region of our own galaxy, the Milky Way. These observations have culminated in a recent release of 14 publications in a dedicated issue of Astronomy & Astrophysics.
In this talk we will present the core part of this programme, the H.E.S.S. Galactic Plane Survey (HGPS), which yielded a catalog of 78 gamma-ray sources. We will discuss this catalog and the source classification. We will also cover the public data products of the HGPS, which have been released to the community.
Further highlights of the Galactic science programme of H.E.S.S., like new results of the shell-type supernova remnant RX J1713.7-3946 or the diffuse galactic ridge emission, released together with the HGPS, will also be discussed.
