OVERVIEW

Since the discovery of astrophysical high-energy neutrinos in 2013 the most pressing question in the young field of neutrino astronomy is where those neutrinos originate. Active Galactic Nuclei are among the prime candidates to host hadronic processes in their powerful jets. The detection of a high-energy neutrino, IceCube-170922A, in spatial coincidence with the bright gamma-ray blazar TXS 0506+056 during an enhanced gamma-ray state of the source could mark the first identification of a high-energy neutrino (and thus cosmic-ray) source.
Motivated by this unique detection, we are organizing a one-day workshop prior to TeVPA in Berlin hosted at DESY in Zeuthen on August 26. This workshop will focus on the relevant multi-messenger observations and discuss the statistical evaluation of the results, with emphasis on different explanations of the results in the context of blazar modeling.
Finally, the discussion will tackle future strategies on how to use the available gamma-ray and neutrino datasets in a more effective way to probe different model predictions. Participation may be limited to a small number of participants to foster fruitful discussions among the leading experts of the field.
