The Resonant Scattering and Diffraction Beamline P09 at the new 3rd generation synchrotron source PETRA III at DESY will start operation in October 2009. It will be a general diffraction beamline but with specific design options for the investigation of materials using the resonant x-ray scattering technique. It will operate in the hard x-ray regime with photon energies ranging from 2.4 keV up to 50 keV. Focused beam will be available in the 2.4 - 24 keV energy range. The beamline will provide variable linearly and circularly polarized x-rays using an in vacuum phase plate setup. Experiments at low temperatures, high magnetic fields and high pressures will be possible. The incident flux delivered by a 2 m spectroscopy undulator will be up to 2e13cps with a focused beam size of 150x40 um2 (FWHM). Additional focusing will permit beam sizes down to 7x4 um2. After first stored particles in the PETRA III electron ring last April, the Resonant Scattering and Diffraction beamline will see first monochromatic X-rays in the experimental hutches in the course of September 2009 and will be commissioned until the end of the year. Mirrors and phase plate set-up will be installed in the optics hutch in December 2009 permitting full operation of the beamline begin of 2010. In the course of 2010, the second experimental hutch will be equipped with a heavy load diffractometer and a 14 Tesla DC split-pair magnet. Usage of this setup by external users will be possible by the end of 2010. At this workshop, the participants are welcome to present their projects and their needs concerning possible beamtime on P09. Information on the performance of the PETRA III ring, the beamline optics and the beamline equipment available to users will be presented by the PETRA III P09 team.
