Description
The colloquium will report on recent advances in particle identification detectors in particle physics based on Cherenkov and transition radiation. After reviewing properties of the two effects and the requirements for complex detector systems based on these phenomena, we will discuss the detectors of the currently operating experiments and the research and development for future projects. We will also review the present status of low-level light sensors. Reference will also be made to developments that are potentially interesting for instrumentation in medical imaging.
