Description
Cosmic rays below 1015 eV are believed to come from our own Galaxy. Their origin and propagation can be studied through the imprint they leave on gamma-ray radiation from background sources due to their interaction with matter and radiation fields. Gamma-ray sources of different sizes (few thousand kms to kilo-parsecs) can directly probe acceleration and propagation of CRs on various scales. I will review the status of this research field and the most outstanding discoveries, and discuss its prospects with the CTA observatory.
