Set up and operation of high resolution monochromators

High resolution beamlines based on the collimated plane grating monochromator designs are the standard beamline type at the electron storage ring BESSY II. Currently twenty beamlines of this type are operational for up to 12 years. The basic optical design principles and results of the beamline commissioning are introduced. Pitfalls in the all day operation give feedback for the construction of new beamlines.
