Analysis Centre seminar: Roger Barlow (Manchester): Making discoveries at the LHC
→
Europe/Berlin
Description
Abstract: For many years particle physics has been setting limits on the existence of new particles, and many sophisticated tools have been developed for the interpretation of results for this purpose.
At the LHC, we will be engaged in making discoveries, and this will require different statistical tools - perhaps adapting existing ones, perhaps rediscovering older techniques.
We survey the field and the issues, including the use of Wilk's theorem and the classic results of Davies on hyposthesis testing.
