Astroparticle Physics

Prompt neutrino fluxes from the atmosphere to colliders

by Maria Vittoria Garzelli (Univ. Hamburg)

Description

Prompt neutrinos are a component of the atmospheric neutrino
flux, a background for the search of neutrinos produced by far astrophysical sources that is carried out at Very Large Volume Neutrino Telescopes, such as IceCube and KM3NeT. Recently, proposals have been developed to detect prompt neutrinos from another source, i.e. the hadronic collisions which take place in the interaction points of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), and use them for measurements capable of constraining physics within and beyond the Standard Model.
In this talk I will give an overview of the status of the field, presenting predictions for prompt neutrinos in the atmosphere as well as in the environment of a forthcoming Forward Physics Facility at the LHC, discussing relevant uncertainties, and presenting ideas of possible studies exploiting prompt neutrino beams.
