Astroparticle Physics

Modern perspectives for stochastic particle acceleration in the high-energy Universe

by Martin Lemoine (Paris)

Description

The acceleration of charged particles to high energies in powerful astrophysical sources such as pulsar winds, active galactic nuclei, gamma-ray bursts etc., represents a central question in modern high-energy astrophysics, astroparticle physics and nowadays, multi-messenger astronomy. Leading contenders for the acceleration scheme are reconnection, stochastic acceleration in turbulent or sheared velocity flows, and shock acceleration. In this talk, I will discuss recent developments in our understanding of particle acceleration in turbulent flows, comparing analytical developments with first principle numerical simulations.
