The new PETRA III facility at DESY, designed to become one of the world's most brilliant hard X-ray storage ring light sources, is currently coming to life. The first three undulator beamlines at PETRA III will be in user operation from August this year, the others are in their final construction phase.

Once all new beamlines are operating in full user mode, it is planned to shut down DORIS III by the end of 2012. This shutdown will discontinue a number of very successful beamlines and instruments, which serve techniques not currently implemented at PETRA III.

In order to carry on these activities in the future and to provide competitive beamlines and instrumentation for techniques not requiring ultimate brilliance, DESY plans to build additional beamlines at PETRA III. One of these will focus on activities currently being performed at the micro-fluorescence spectroscopy beamline L.

It is the aim of this workshop to discuss requirements and options needed for micro-fluorescence spectroscopy at a new PETRA III extension beamline complementing the micro-/nano-probe capabilities of other PETRA III beamlines, such as the hard X-ray Micro-/Nano-Probe P06 and the Biological imaging/diffraction beamline P11.
