MORNING SESSION. CAREER PATHS OF SCIENTISTS, 9:30 - 12:30

Keynote speakers:

Antje Wegner, DZHW: "Career paths of scientists", 9:30 - 10:45

Dr. Antje Wegner is a junior group leader at the German Centre for Higher Education Research and Science Studies (Deutsches Zentrum für Hochschul- und Wissenschaftsforschung DZHW). She studied Sociology, Psychology and Economics at the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg and the Saint Petersburg State University. From 2009 to 2012 she carried out research in the field of risk research and regional sciences at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). She completed her Ph.D. there in 2015. In parallel, she has been engaged in various projects at the Institute for Research Information and Quality Assurance (iFQ) between 2012 and 2015, including the evaluation of the ERC Starting Grant program (MERCI) as well as studies on Ph.D. training and research careers in Vietnam (EvaCap) and international researchers at German higher education institutions (MIND). Antje Wegner has led the Doctorate Candidates Panel and the research unit Self-Recruitment and Careers at the DZHW in 2015 before starting to work with DZHW since 2016.

Dr. Linda Jauch, HRA: CVs and application documents: Introductory lecture", 11:00 - 12:30

Dr. Linda Jauch is responsible for postdocs and junior professors at the Hamburg Research Academy. After completing her entire higher education in the UK (London, Oxford, Cambridge), she decided for a career in higher education management and started as administrator for Cambridge’s Judge Business School. Moving to Germany she held various positions at Freie Universität Berlin, focussing more and more on early career researchers. From 2014 to 2018 she managed the Graduate Academy of the Universität of Oldenburg and also served as assistant to the vice president for early career researchers. She is an active member of various national groups and associations surrounding support for early career researchers and co-author of the UniWind publication "Außeruniversitäre Karrierewege für Promovierte: Arbeitgeber im Gespräch“ (2018).The Hamburg Research Academy is the central port of call for prospective doctoral candidates, doctoral students, postdoctoral researchers, junior professors, and their supervisors at nine higher education institutions in Hamburg.

Industry: Mariya Doneva, Philips

Dr. Doneva is a Senior Scientist and a Team Leader at Philips Research, Hamburg, Germany. She received her BSc and MSc degrees in Physics from the University of Oldenburg and her PhD degree in Physics from the University of Lübeck. After finishing her PhD in 2010 she joined Philips Research. She was a Research Associate at Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences department at UC Berkeley between 2015 and 2016. Dr. Doneva has been serving in the organizing committees of several conferences including the Annual meeting of the ISMRM 2019-2021, ISBI 2020, and the ISMRM Workshop on Data Sampling and Image Reconstruction 2020. Over the last ten years she has given over 25 invited talks including plenary lectures in front of large audience with mixed technical and clinical background. Science Communication: Michael Büker, freelancer

Michael Büker has worked in science communication since his graduation in physics in 2012. Data Science: Nicolai Klemke, OQmented

Dr. Nicolai Klemke did his PhD at DESY in Hamburg, studying the interaction of strong ultrafast laser pulses with thin crystals. Although an experimentalist by training, he discovered during his PhD that he enjoyed programming a lot and got involved with machine learning during the last year of his studies. To further deepen his knowledge in that area, he completed a three-month long data science bootcamp at "neue fische" after his PhD. Afterwards he started as a system architect at OQmented, a deep-tech startup in Itzehoe, working on a project at the intersection of optics and machine learning.

 

Non-profit, Benjamin Stephan, Greenpeace

Dr. Benjamin Stephan is working at the NGO Greenpeace Deutschland since 2017, where he is the repsonsible transport campaigner for the ‘Verkehrswende’. From 2014 - 2017, he worked as a research analyst at the German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU) focusing on science based political consultancy on sustainable develeopment, climate change and urbanization. Benjamin Stephan also was a consultant, researcher and coach on climate change, renewable energy, urban development and the agro-industry. In 2014, he finished his doctoral thesis in the socio-economy department of Universität Hamburg with a focus on climate governance particularly carbon markets and avoiding tropical deforestation (REDD+).

 

Industry: Lars Landschreiber, Melchior & Wittpohl

Since 2019, Dr. Lars Landschreiber is working for the engineering company Melchior & Wittpohl which focusses on soil protection on infrastrcutrue construction sites and soil remediation. He studied soil science at Universität Hamburg and pursued his master and doctoral thesis in projects in southern Africa. From 2016-2019, Lars Landschreiber was a research associate at the Institute of Geography in the iSSS (Integrated support system for sustainable land-use) of the university.

Industry: Eva Philips, Vattenfall

Dr. Eva Philips is the director of the Environment & Sustainability Unit of the Business Area Wind in Vattenfall. Her team supports BA Wind in Environment & Sustainability operational and strategic questions within Offshore, Onshore, Solar and Battery projects in Northern & Western Europe. Eva Philips is a biologist and worked over 10 years in science before joining Vattenfall Wind in 2012. Her theoretical & practical experience covers a wide range of  Environment & Sustainability topics throughout the full lifecycle of assets.

 

Science Communication: Alexander Britz, freelancer

Dr. Alexander Britz was a doctoral student at European XFEL, IMPRS-UFAST, CUI & PIER in Hamburg. He continued to pursue his interdisciplinary research studying chemical systems and novel materials with lasers, X-rays and electrons at SLAC National Accelerator Lab/Stanford University before he became a Trainer, Coach and Facilitator for young scientists. Since 2020 he is self-employed and works with young scientists, such as PhD students and Postdocs, on developing their communication, creativity, management, and leadership skillset. Start-up: Elena Mechik, INHUBBER

Dr. Elena Mechik finished her PhD on "Conservation of Tropical Forests agains illegal loffing" in 2017. Shortly afterwards, she has founded a start-up with the topic of providing trust and transparency into the buisness relationships and the ultimate goal of using blockchaint-based contract management to achieve a transparend supply chaing for timer and utimately fight illegal logging. Teaching: Miriam Schwentker, Gymnasium Corveystrasse, Hamburg

Dr. Miriam Schwentker currently works as a teacher of physics and mathematics in a high school in Hamburg. After acquiring her diploma in physics at the University of Heidelberg (working in the lab of Prof. Sackmann), she worked on her doctorate on super resolution micorscopy in the Lave of Nobel laureate Stefan Hell in Göttingen. In a next stept she turned from the scientific field towards industry and spent 11 years as a procut manager with Olympus Europe. As a product manager she was responsible for the European-wide marketing of different types of microscopes. Afer her second bay, she once again decided to switch careers and is now employed as a teacher for physics and maths since 2017.

 

Public administration: Korbinian Freier, Bayerisches Landesamt für Umwelt

Since 2020 Dr. Korbinian P. Freier is part of the president's staff of the Bavarian Environment Agency. He completed his diploma in 2007 in Geoecology/environmental Sciences at the University of Bayreuth/Germany. After that he moved to Hamburg for his PhD studies in the Research Unit Sustainability and Global Change at Universität Hamburg and the International Max Planck Research School on Earth System Modelling with supervision of Prof. Dr. Uwe A. Schneider. He completed his PhD on modelling alternative land-use regimes in north Africa. After his PhD, he worked as project manager for the Bavarian Environment Agency in the fields of bionics and environmental chemistry and combined scientific research with implementation of environmental politics. He authored and edited a broad spectrum of scientific articles as well as books, reports, videos and magazines.

 

Science management: Alexandra Franzke, SICSS Graduate School, Universität Hamburg

Dr Alexandra Franzke received her doctorate in evolutionary biology from Bielefeld University and did a postdoc in Ecuador. As a science manager, she worked for more than five years at the University of Freiburg in the field of research funding and career advising for postdocs and junior professors. At TU Dortmund University, she established the university-wide graduate center of postdoctoral qualification activities and was responsible for career coaching and the implementation of training and networking events. Since April 2021 she is Executive Head of SICSS and responsible for the coordination and implementation of qualification offers for postdocs. Furthermore she is a systemic coach and change manager (DBVC recognized).
