To discuss the scientific opportunities offered by the installation of a 1D imaging soft X-ray spectrometer at the SQS instrument a two-day workshop is organized at the European XFEL in Schenefeld on October 21-22, 2021. As a specific aim of the workshop, community proposals will be initiated, with the intention that they can be submitted within the next call for proposals, i.e. before the corresponding deadline, December 1, 2021.

The spectrometer records high-energy-resolution X-ray emission spectra (XES) perpendicularly to the propagation direction of the incident FEL beam. A novel feature is the 1D imaging capability that allows for separation of XES from 15-micron segments of the propagating beam. We envision that this will be useful in investigations of non-linear X-ray phenomena, and in time-resolved studies. Applications where several pulses are used are especially attractive, as the delay between the pulses varies along the imaged beam path.

The initial objective is fundamental AMO research, with low-density targets using atomic and molecular beams, as well as processes in higher-density media using gas-cells. But we also foresee applications in chemically relevant systems, using liquid-beam targets and advanced sample introduction systems allowing for cluster and nanoparticle studies.
