In Germany, the Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz (WissZeitVG) regulates that young scientists may be employed for a maximum of 12 years on fixed-term contracts during their qualification (predoc and postdoc) phases. After that, a decision must be made: for a career in academia with a fixed.-term or unlimited contract or for another career path, e.g. to industry or science management.

For your own career planning, it is important to know the contents of this law:

  • What should be considered when signing a contract?
  • Which periods of employment fall under the 12-year rule?
  • How are breaks in employment, such as parental leave or periods spent abroad, taken into account?
  • How does the WissZeitVG affect grants, third-party funding and employment at non-university research institutions?

Henning Rockmann is an expert and will explain the contents of the law in his talk and answer questions about it.
