With the start of the new Free-Electron Laser sources a new era in X-ray science has just begun. First experiments at FLASH, the XUV-Free-Electron Laser at DESY in Hamburg, and recently also at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) in Stanford, have shown that the unprecedented brilliance, the coherence, and the ultrashort pulses of these sources enable new insights in many different fields such as atomic and molecular physics, cluster physics, condensed matter physics, material science, femtochemistry, structural biology, and high energy density science.
At DESY in Hamburg we have upgraded the existing user facility FLASH, which has been in operation since 2005, and we will built the next generation source FLASH II, a fully seeded FEL. On the occasion of the new start of FLASH after the upgrade and in preparation for FLASH II we plan a workshop at DESY from Sept. 27th to Sept. 29th 2010 focusing on recent results obtained with FLASH and on new ideas in the field of Free-Electron Laser Science.
Young scientists are kindly requested and strongly encouraged to participate. Their travel expenses and accommodation will be reimbursed according to DESY rules.
This workshop has received funding from the European Community's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013) under grant n° 226716, Networking Activity 3: "WP4: Pulsed X-Rays from Hard and Soft Sources (PUSH)".
Additional funding is provided by the BMBF through the priority program FSP 301: FLASH - Matter in the Light of Ultrashort and Extremely Intense X-Ray Pulses.
