Simulating UHECRs extra-galactic propagation: numerical frameworks and technical barriers

Despite the progress made by modern observatories, the origin of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) remains an unsolved problem to this day. The search for UHECR sources is further complicated by two factors: during extra-galactic propagation UHECRs interact with background photon fields and they are deflected by extra-galactic and galactic magnetic fields. In order to extract as much information as possible for observed data, UHECR propagation can be simulated by using Monte Carlo codes like CRPropa and SimProp. I will present the main physical ingredients of these numerical approaches and technical difficulties present today.
