Description
Abstract: In mathematics, passing from "finite" to "infinite" --- and, similarly, from "discrete" to "continuous" --- is often accompanied by emergence of qualitatively new phenomena and the need for new tools. Sometimes the resulting divide is so large that the subject splits into separate parts, as e.g. with the theory of finite-dimensional vs infinite-dimensional algebras, or the theory of finite vs infinite graphs, or the study of algebraic number fields vs finite fields. In this talk, we will discuss recent developments in quantum topology and in quantum algebra which, on the one hand, are motivated by long-standing problems in low-dimensional topology and, on the other hand, have their origin in the passage from "finite" to "infinite."
