Description

Dear Doctoral Researchers,

we are excited to announce our first-ever hybrid DOIT Job Seminar, which is happening in two weeks, on September 8th!

The invited speakers are physicists who now work in the "industry". They give an introduction to what they are doing and also answer the question of what drove their decision to leave academia, a great opportunity to see interesting career options after the PhD.

There will be plenty of time for a discussion with the speaker.

This time our esteemed guest will be Prof. Dr. Michael Feindt.
He will share with us his life and career journey which connects DESY, CERN, professorship at KIT, working with AI, and how he founded different companies, of which one was sold for 8 billion dollars (more details in the abstract below):

“A personal review of an unusual career in academia and industry with important lessons learned that may influence your career”

When: Friday, September 8th, 15:50
In-person location: CFEL (building 99) Seminar room IV

Zoom room: Will be announced shortly before the seminar

Having a hybrid seminar also means that you can join from anywhere in the world, and for those who join in-person, you will have the opportunity to network with one another and have some refreshments, coffee and sweets. Therefore, we ask you to register as soon as the link is available (coming soon).

We hope to meet many of you in person!
Best regards on behalf of DOIT,

Severin, Jan, Saiva and Dawit

P.S.: The abstract by Prof. Feindt:

The talk will describe my academic career starting at DESY via CERN to a KIT professorship with experiments at Fermilab and KEK, as well as my parallel industry career from the foundation of my first company in 2002, growth and internationalization up to the sales of my second company Blue Yonder to Panasonic at a valuation of US$ 8.5 bln in 2021, and my new project bringy Ltd.
All these endeavors based on 30 years of developing, applying and fighting for the acceptance of modern modern machine learning (AI/ML) methods first in high energy physics, then also in finance, insurance, retail, and supply chain industries.  They are driven by scientific curiosity and the deep belief in the superiority of strictly scientific methodologies.
I will talk about technical and entrepreneurial, but also cultural and very personal aspects I have learned over decades in science and industry communities and will be available for answering your questions that probably will influence your thinking about your future professional career.
