Get tips and insights on how to pursue a career in academics! Have your questions ready for our guest, Dr Rob Shalloo.
Rob is an experimental plasma accelerator physicist in the M-Division at DESY where his work focuses on combining high-intensity lasers with plasmas to generate ultra-compact particle accelerators. Rob studied Physics at University College Cork in Ireland, completing his Bachelors in 2014. During his undergraduate he spent a year at the University of California Berkeley, where he first encountered the concept of plasma-based particle accelerators. Inspired by the fast-paced and exciting work in this area, he decided to pursue a career in research on the topic and so moved to the University of Oxford to study a for a DPhil (PhD) in Particle Physics. In 2018 after submitting his thesis, Rob took up a postdoctoral position at Imperial College London before moving to the plasma accelerator group at DESY in 2020. Rob became a staff scientist in 2022 and was recently awarded funding to set up an independent research group through the Emmy Noether Programme from the DFG (German Research Foundation).
