Disappearing tracks in ATLAS for Run 3 searches

Not scheduled
20m

Description

Various models of physics beyond the Standard Model predict particles with significant lifetimes, which can produce unique signatures in collider experiments. In the ATLAS experiment, charged particles that live just long enough to pass the innermost layers of the tracking detector can be reconstructed as so-called disappearing tracks. These particles appear for example in some supersymmetric models. While ATLAS has searched for new particles using disappearing tracks in the past, Run 3 brings new opportunities to extend these searches to more massive and shorter lived particles. These developments include new dedicated triggers and pixel dE/dx measurements. In this project, the performance of the disappearing track trigger and reconstruction will be studied in view of Run 3 searches.
