Description

Noninvertible symmetries are an intriguing generalization of the standard idea of symmetries in QFT. It is natural to ask what is their fate in theories of quantum gravity, where we do not expect any global symmetries. Two cases in which the absence of standard global symmetries is particularly well understood are worldsheet global symmetries and global symmetries of the boundary CFT in holography. We discuss noninvertible symmetries in these contexts, and find that the no global symmetries conjecture is obeyed very nontrivially. We also discuss some applications of these results to other swampland conjectures. Based on 2402.00118.
