Description
The availability of ultrashort X-ray pulses allows for conducting X-ray diffraction experiments with femtosecond temporal resolution. It was recognized early that ultrafast X-ray diffraction signals are more complex than their static counterparts due to contributions from populations and coherences of various electronic states.
A formulation based on the density matrix to describe ultrafast X-ray diffraction signals will be discussed first. Simulations will be presented on 1) azobenzene photoexcited by an optical pump pulse and 2) a Zn-Ni porphyrin dimer solvated in water with a stimulated Raman X-ray pump.
