      SciCat and dCache 20m

There used be ideas about using dCache for SciCat, but this was a long time ago - so long that we need an update on this! Marina will tell us all about it!

Speaker: Marina Sahakyan (IT (IT Scientific Computing))

      Protocol 10:04-10:27

Marina introduced us into dCache at DESY, where it originates from and how it has expanded and still is expanding: dCache is a storage system, supports many protocols and is able to cover the full life cycle of data, from ingestion (e.g.effective handling of large number of files), analysis (e.g.chaotic access, high performance computation), up to long term preservation.

She introduced a fairly new feature of dCache: tagging or labeling for finding datafiles once they are stored which can be stored either on disk or on tape – dCache handles both.

One big advantage of dCache is the in-house expertise.

Comment (PM): SciCat has more flexibility in adopting to storage systems than iCat.

      To-Do:

Figure out use of dCache with SciCat in addition to dCache instance currently used in public-data.desy.de → ask IT-InFa (Peter van der Reest).
