Sustainability:

ErUM researchers from all 8 ErUM communities as well as researchers from related disciplines and industry are cordially invited to submit a contribution in the 5 thematic areas. Standard contributions are expected to be between 8 + 2 and 20 + 5 minutes long. We are particularly interested in new approaches that we as a community should consider and could implement in the future.

Your contribution does not fit into a topic? You can submit your contribution under the category “other”. We will do our best to accommodate all contributions.

Possible Contents (Under further processing)

Future of Science & Teaching

      • How will ErUM science change in future?
      • Knowledge transfer & education: what concepts will stay to be important, what will be new?

Spreading & Enhancing Motivation

      • How to support ErUM-Data Sustainability projects & initiatives?
      • How do we ensure the impact on users is managed so that they actively participate?
      • Sustainability Communication: how to spread motivation among scientists.

AI / Sustainable Programming & Footprint

      • If software gets more efficient by factor n will then e.g. simualtion run factor n more or will stop after initial goal reached?
      • What are the implications for users?

Hardware & Footprint

      • How to handle CO2-budget of the production of hardware?
      • Ethical implications of Life Cycle analysis (where machines are made - where they end up)

Sustainable ErUM research centres of the future (& the ethics of how we run them)

      • Footprint & Full life cycle analysis
      • What do future data-centres look like and what informs this?
      • Ecology: How computing centres fit into the local surroundings (e.g. re-using waste heat to provide heat for farming vegetables)
      • Novel power sources for datacentres: building datacentres where power is being generated

Ethics:

We invite you to submit contributions on topics that consider ethics in the further development of AI (e.g. sustainable use of resources from an ethical perspective, using AI in teaching, does AI replace human creativity in ErUM Research? How will it be possible to realize predominantly human-performed research activities with the support of AI tools in the future? What is our contribution?). Standard contributions are expected to be between 8 + 2 and 20 + 5 minutes long.
