Learn how to identify unique selling points in research and business in our next PIER Startup Workshop “Creating Innovation with the Blue Ocean Strategy” for early stage researchers (doctoral researchers and postdocs), taking place on 12 September 2025 (remote).

The Blue Ocean Strategy (BOS) is an approach to creating new, uncontested market areas (“blue oceans”) by developing value innovations for companies or projects that appeal to new customer groups and make the competition irrelevant. It aims to overcome traditional market boundaries by challenging old rules and defining new ways to create value.

The BOS includes four methods (eliminate, reduce, improve and create) that enable a company to compare potential markets, recognize patterns and think radically differently about its own ideas and approaches. Using examples such as “Paypal” or “Cirque de Soleil”, participants learn how founders can use the Blue Ocean Strategy to systematically differentiate themselves from their competitors by analyzing their own strengths and opportunities in terms of unique selling points and thus position themselves completely differently in the market. With the BOS, researchers also learn how to tap into new, untapped opportunities in their field of research, how to develop interdisciplinary innovations, and how to develop new ideas. In this interactive online workshop, participants will develop tools and strategies to rethink research or business and ensure long-term success.

Contents:

  • Introduction to the Blue Ocean Strategy frameworks, tools and methods
  • Case Studies: Identification of opportunities in untapped research/business fields.
  • Hands-on: Apply the Blue Ocean strategy to projects.
