abstract:
Global discovery of scientific data products within larger communities – astronomy and astroparticle in this case – is a challenge that requires both machine-readable search interfaces in the data centres and means to discover them. Both are provided by the Virtual Observatory, and yet actually executing a global search is surprisingly involved. In this talk, I will describe an API for global image searches that tries to abstract (but not entirely hide) the complexities, among which are possibly incomplete resource metadata, multiple standards data centres use, datasets published in multiple ways, and of course temporary failures and services broken on the longer term.
