The Know Your Footprint (Kyf) initiative provides a framework to estimate the professional carbon footprint of individual researchers in high energy physics (HEP) and related data-intensive fields. It accounts for emissions from four main categories: Experiment, Institute, Computing, and Travel. The approach is grounded in data from institutions such as CERN, DESY, German universities and more.
The methodology recently published in npj Climate Action, a Nature Portfolio journal (2025), will be presented in this seminar. It includes how emissions are quantified across research activities, how per-person contributions are estimated, and how the Kyf calculator enables researchers to self-assess their footprint using role-specific benchmarks. The seminar will also conclude with brief insights from the analysis of data collected during its first year of use.
