ELBEX / General

  • Funding for fusion experiment not as quick as hoped for, although it is one of EuXFEL's science pillars and so they are committed.
    • Some discussion amongst the Directorates of DESY and EuXFEL needed.
  • Ruth reported that the ELBEX team are starting to put a small working-group together to design the beamline and cost what would be needed for LUXE.
    • Work also ongoing on possible facility for plasma wakefield acceleration.
  • Interest from LUPE people to be more joined up with LUXE.
    • If their synergy grant is succesful could bring in resources for detectors and laser.
    • Even if not successful, interest from Andi Maier (laser plasma leader at DESY) to contribute.
  • Overall technical timeline: commissioning of ELBEX in 2029 and possible LUXE data taking in 2030.

Laser

  • Refurbishment of laser room in HERA West ongoing with aim to have done by the end of the year.
    • Laser safety team in place.
  • Default is to have the laser kept "alive" by periodic testing.
  • Experiments, e.g. diagnostic development for LUXE, may be possible but needs extra resources and also radiation and safety levels need to be assessed.

Software and analysis

  • Sasha has the CAD for the new experimental area and is working on lxsim.

Electron detection system

  • Antonios is starting to write his thesis; Luke will start soon.  Ivo is now in Zurich, having left DESY.
    • Effort is a bit low.

Positron detection system

  • As such a large amount of data was collected at the beam tests, DESY IT need to provide temporary disc space before then transferring to outside institutes.  This is a possible solution for any future disc needs from e.g. beam tests.

Photon detection system

  • Will perform tests of the gamma ray spectrometer and profiler at the ZEUS petawatt laser in Michigan.  Using real Compton events.
  • Analysis of the profiler data from CLEAR tests is still ongoing.

Next meeting: Wednesday 30th July at 11:00 (CEST).

There are minutes attached to this event. Show them.
