Important notes for everybody:

  • Figure out how much time each of your subexercises should take

  • Label stuff as bonus material if you think it’s too much

  • TEST TEST TEST. Send to students/friends/whoever. You can ask summer students (or bachelors/masters students in general) to test at least the basic setup of your exercises since they should have relatively clean areas

  • Please fill out this google form (https://forms.gle/hbmk9Tdu6vNjnQBK8), once per exercise, by September 11, so we have all the important info for each exercise.

  • We have made a central gitlab https://gitlab.cern.ch/cmsdas-hamburg-2025 group for you to create repos here, if you would like (not mandatory)

  • We have made a central AFS area on lxplus (/afs/cern.ch/cms/Tutorials/CMSDASinHamburg2025) where you can put input files. Try not to fill it up with TBs of data - we have also asked for central EOS space in the meantime.

  • Please check the 2024 pre-exercises (https://cmsdas-cern-2024.docs.cern.ch/) to see if we should add anything there, or if all of this is actually needed for your exercises. If an existing pre-exercise is not needed, we will keep it there as bonus, and simply not make it mandatory.

  • We will have a final 1-2 hr meeting with facilitators in early October, once the registration closes and we have assigned participants to each exercise. Won’t be as long as these other meetings, but just to touch base one more time before the DAS and answer any last minute questions

Pre-exercises:

  • Most participants didnt make it through all of them last time 🙁

  • Intimidating

  • Reorganize the list with more basic at the start

    • 0: log into lxplus

    • Root, pyroot, git

  • Add VScode

  • Per-exercise, if they need more, we write that down & mark things as optional

Inclusive jets (Patrick, Ying)

  • Still undecided if it will be inclusive jet or Drell-Yan, but in any case, I plan a 2D cross section measurement with 2018 data (just call it "2D cross section measurement"), using the this analysis software, on which two SMP exercises were based at the PODAS23 (inclusive jet and Z->mu mu gamma).

  • The software is working both on NAF and lxplus. I only need to put some slides together.

  • Preference from participants for DY

  • Need Patrick and Ying to finalize the choice

  •

Ttbar cross section (Dominic, Evan, Beatriz)

  • Add Beatriz as facilitator

  • Exercise performed twice before at previous DASes

  • Documentation is still the 2024 version, need to update it

  • Still many updates to the exercises are needed

  • No updates to dataset planned

  • Short exercises: optional to do combine limits

Documentation on mkDocs from Evan, can be used for all long exercises

  • Jeremi and Soumyaa agree it’s really easy to use

Higgs to 4 leptons (Daniel, Matteo)

  • Should run on lxplus + personal eos space, no additional requirements

    • Will test on lxplus today/tomorrow

  • Aiming to port documentation (currently on slides) to webpage

  • Ask students to install analysis software beforehand

  • Optional pre-exercise: tutorials on awkward, combine limits exercise

  • Learned lesson wrt previous versions of the exercise to focus on the necessary aspects

  • Should have everything by next week

Displaced search (Jeremi, Soumyaa)

  • 10 exercises, 7 core + 3 bonus

  • Exercises mostly done, finalizing now

  • Already being tested by Soumyaa

  • Documentation done on Evan’s website

  • Call the exercise “Long-lived particle searches”

  • The setup instructions be pre-exercises

    • Submit condor jobs

  • Prerequisites? Combine limits short exercise is mandatory. Jets, muons, and applying central corrections exercises are optional

  • Grid/ condor? Need grid certificate to run on condor?

  • EOS space: how much? For input samples

  • Output space per participant is much smaller: please tell us how much here too

Dark matter (Danyer, Daina)

  • Also in CERN 2024 DAS

  • Focus on 2016 data only for dataset availability and time considerations

  • Danyer’s framework with root and c++

  • Input on DAS EOS space - make sure it’s not deleted!

  • Don’t need grid

  • Combine limits short exercise should be mandatory prerequisite

  • Exercise is ready 🙂

  • Still need to finalize documentation (70% done), improve instructions, Daina to test

  • MET: will not have dedicated short exercise, but will be mentioned in jet exercise

    • Danyer to follow up with Dennis and Andreas to tell them what they should include on MET

  • Jet (met) short exercise as optional or maybe required prerequisite, depending on Danyer’s conversation with Dennis and Andreas

  • Include in exercise description that based on c++

  • 10 GB per participant

  • Evan: be prepared to shorten part on combine

Juliette to edit google form for question on exercise description: ask to include if based on python, c++, etc

There are minutes attached to this event. Show them.
