Attosecond science using ultrafast optical pulses has revolutionized our understanding of electron dynamics on their intrinsic timescales. Recent advances in electron bunch compression techniques at X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) facilities have enabled the generation of attosecond X-ray pulses. In this colloquium, I will discuss the generation, temporal diagnostics, and applications of attosecond hard X-ray pulses at LCLS, SACLA, and European XFEL.
