Description
You might have already heard about terms like "data deluge" or the
Peta- (now Hexascale) data; the new hype is called "Big Data", but
what does this all mean to science?
After an introduction on data growth and the challenges it presents to
science we will see how Earth Sciences are coping with this new
paradigm.
The most advanced project in climate change research so far is CMIP5,
managing 10 PB of data for the 5th IPCC Assessment Report.
We will have a look at the design of the infrastructure supporting it
and the reason of this particular development.
