The PIER Idea Day
is meant to inform you about the current call of the PIER funding instrument. The presentation of successful PIER Ideenfonds projects should give you an idea of what kind of projects will be funded. The overview of the PIER research fields also gives you inspiration for new research ideas and incentives for new collaborations.
PIER Seed Projects
The aim of the funding is to pick up good research ideas and to enable their implementation. Funding will focus on creative ideas, lateral thinking as well as risky research ideas with possibly high potential benefits.
PIER Seed Project funding supports the identification, testing, elaboration and implementation of innovative ideas in research and development in the four PIER research fields. The funding concentrates on innovative research and development projects at an early stage where a rapid andnon-bureaucratic financial support can significantly contribute to advances in knowledge.
The aim of a PIER workshop is to promote the interinstitutional and/or interdisciplinary cooperation within PIER, and in doing so, pushing on with stimulating and promoting idea-finding processes on a sustainable basis. Therefore, PIER workshops can be distinguished from academic, lecture-oriented workshops which are aimed at a small peer group.
PIER workshops are characterized by
- the fact that they provide a sufficient amount of time for participants to engage in discussions,
- the topics reach beyond what is discussed in specialized scientific communities,
- participants come from different organizations and disciplinary fields,
- and the aim is to create new ideas and foster new cooperation.
PIERoffers a number of research fellowships for researchers at any stage of their career. Successful candidates will be expected to participate in the scientific activities at DESY and the Universität Hamburg and to collaborate with its members.
The guest stays – in terms of PIER funding – must be aimed to develop new ideas in interdisciplinary and/or inter-institutional context. Accordingly PIER fellows should have intensive exchange with more than one group/one institution during their stay.

PIER is the strategic partnership between DESY and Universität Hamburg ("Partnership for Innovation, Education and Research)". It is a future-oriented collaboration between two strong partners in the Hamburg metropolitan area which aim to jointly promote top-level education, research and innovation.
PIER focuses on the following research fields: Particle and Astroparticle Physics, Nanosciences, Photon Science and Infection and Structural Biology. Additional interdisciplinary areas include Theory of Physics (Wolfgang Pauli Centre) and Accelerator Research. PIER is jointly funded by DESY, Universität Hamburg, University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE), the Helmholtz Association and the Joachim Herz Stiftung.
