Writing skills workshop

++++ NOTE: THE SCIENTIFIC WRITING COURSE IS ALREADY FULLY BOOKED +++

Programme:

This workshop teaches effective science writing, and combines short lectures with practical exercises and homework.

You will learn to:
  • develop strategies for writing clear, concise, and persuasive papers and proposals,
  • understand and target your audience,
  • develop your writing style and routine,
  • write with confidence and ease, and
  • give, receive, and apply supportive, critical feedback on written work.
Since the principles of good science writing cut across all fields, scientists from any discipline will benefit from this programme. Each participant’s draft manuscript or proposal serves as the centrepiece that will be edited and improved with a focus on structure, clarity, and reader engagement.

Agenda:
  • Day 1: The quick fix – everything the (writing) scientist should know.
  • Day 2: Structuring information for your readers; identifying (and writing for) your audience.
  • Day 3: Data & story telling – turning complex science into compelling writing, and common mistakes in science writing you should avoid.
  • Day 4: How highly cited scientists write (analysis & discussion of the provided publications).
  • Days 1-4: Additional feedback sessions on your writing progress.

Sessions for registrants in group E1: 6-9 October 2014, 13:15-14:45h, SR III, CFEL + additional feedback sessions on your writing progress (16:30-18:00h)
