Do you need to strengthen your languages skills in e.g. German, English, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese (e.g. Mandarin or Cantonese), Swedish, Norwegian or any other language in the world or you just simply miss speaking your own mother tongue? Then please join us every two weeks at the DESY Language Café!
The key idea of this Language Café is: "Learn a language well for free while helping others learn another language well for free."
So far we have had 8 very successful Language Café meetings with around 25-30 participants each time, who participated at either the German, French, Italian, English, Mandarin, Russian, Swedish, Norwegian or Spanish speaking table.
The Language Café will be held every two weeks, on Fridays around lunch hour.
Participation is free of charge. All involvement by the organizers is made on a voluntary basis. In case you would like to assist the organizers in further developing this language Café, you are also welcome to sign up to be a moderator for your mother tongue or any other language you speak well.
The registration is always open. Please keep in mind that you only need to register for your very first visit to the DESY Language Café. If you already registered to a previous language Café meeting, there is no need to register again. In total, we have 81 registered participants, who show up whenever they have time.
FOOD AND BEVERAGES:
Please bring your own lunch, e.g. a small sandwich, as no food or beverages will be provided by the organizers. After having received some feedback after the very first Language Café, one participant suggested that we could share the costs of catering or that selected participants organize various Country specific theme lunches one rotating schedule. If you have more ideas, you are free to leave a comment on the evaluation form.
In order to make sure that both participants and moderators get to practice their 1st choice language, the meeting will be divided into 2 x 30 min sessions, where session 1 will be held between 13.00 - 13.30 and session 2 between 13.30 - 14.00. In the evaluation that we have sent out, 80% of the moderators preferred this alternative.
MODERATORS AND PARTICIPANTS:
There will be at least 1 moderator per table. In order to make sure that everyone will have the possibility to speak we recommend, not more than 3 to 4 participants per table + 1 moderator, so in total 4-5 persons per table. In the evaluation that we have sent out, 52% felt that 4 participants per table were optimal, 35% answered 3 participants and 4% answered 5 participants or more.
SCENARIOS (for participants):
1. If a table is already full (approximately 5 persons in total, including the moderator) when you come to visit, then please consider changing to your 2nd choice language and then come back later for your 1st choice language instead.
2. If you find a table empty, with no moderator, then please wait at the table and hold up the respective Flag, until a moderator arrives.
SCENARIOS (for moderators):
If there are no participants at your home table during your session as a moderator, then please feel free to join any other table as a participant in the meantime. Please also keep an eye on your home table, in case a participant is standing at your home table while holding up a Flag. If so, please return to your home table.
