Abstract:

The physics of black holes puts in sharp conflict Quantum Mechanics and General Relativity, the two founding pillars of modern physics.

I will review the construction of black holes in String Theory, and several important development steps towards solving this conflict, such as the counting of black hole entropy using D-branes, the construction of horizonless solutions that correspond to the microstates of black holes, and the AdS$_3$ and AdS$_2$ holographic analysis of black holes and their microstates.
