DESY-GIF Young Scientists’ Meeting “Origins: from elementary particles to complex chemical and biological systems”

The GIF Young Scientists’ Meetings are organized by the German-Israeli Foundation for Scientific Research and Development (GIF) as a new platform for young researchers from Germany and Israel, to become acquainted with each other’s work, learn about funding opportunities, and discuss their ideas with established scientists in their field of research. The aim of this GYSM workshop is to initiate interdisciplinary discussions between different, sometimes remote but complementary, scientific disciplines, ranging from cosmic descriptions, particle physics, and all the way to complex chemistry and biology. Looking beyond one's scientific horizon, interdisciplinary approach to science is of increasing importance for developing novel concepts as well as for describing and understanding fundamental processes in nature. This can be demonstrated independent of whether we study these issues on the microscopic or the macroscopic scale. The common topics and questions we would like to discuss in this workshop aim at the origin: the origin of the universe, the origin of fundamental matter, and the origin of complex matter and life. The workshop will give an overview about the different (theoretical and experimental) approaches taken in the different disciplines for developing strategies for describing and quantifying different types of origins. Crosslinking between the workshop's disciplines will be discussed in breakout sessions. In line with the intention to bring together young scientists, presentations will be made by doctoral students in the last stages of obtaining their degree and scholars up to 5 years after their PhD / establishing their own research group.
