Fault detection and diagnosis are investigated in automation engineering since several decades. The field currently receives attention because modern machine learning tools can be used to solve these problems in various application areas. The talk introduces the problem from a system theoretic perspective, points out solution methods and discusses their relevance with regard to particle accelerators.
