The aim of the workshop is to initialize the working periods of the two projects which are both funded by the German BMBF within the framework of the German-Russian Cooperation "Development and Use of Accelerator-Based Photon Sources":

“High accuracy measurements of partial photoionization cross sections of rare gases
– a crucial database for FEL photon diagnostics”

S.V. Bobashev (Ioffe Institute), M. Richter (PTB), A. Sorokin (DESY) and K. Tiedtke (DESY)

“Correlation and Polarization Phenomena in Ionization of Dilute Species
by XUV and X ray Radiation”

A.N. Grum-Grzhimailo, N.M. Kabachnik (Moscow State University), M. Meyer (XFEL) and J. Viefhaus (DESY)

Both projects consist of joint experimental and theoretical investigations concentrating on the dynamics of the interaction of intense XUV and x-ray radiation with dilute species. Whereas the first project aims for the accurate determination of partial photoionization cross sections of noble gases (helium, neon, argon, krypton, and xenon) and molecular nitrogen in the photon energy range from 50 eV to few tens keV, the second project will address four topics: non-dipole effects, three-body Coulomb systems, sequential two-photon double ionization and pump-probe studies. Emphasis will be given in both projects to processes and phenomena which become accessible by the new accelerator-driven light sources and which are essential for our fundamental understanding of light-matter interaction. In the course of these projects, new experimental techniques and theoretical methods will be developed.

The workshop is organized such that during the first day all team members of both projects have joint working sessions covering topics of common interest. Special talks by external experts will be given to aid the selection of the prime investigation targets. In the first half of the second day the individual projects will concentrate on detailing their individual work plans. The workshop will be closed by a joint session which will again allow identifying areas of common interest as well as to implement direct collaboration activities of the two projects within their respective work plans.
