At PETRA III, DESY is planning to build a Small Angle X-Ray Scattering beamline featuring an incident beam with high photon flux and moderate beam cross section. This is intended to be complementary to the micro- and nano-focus beamline already existing at PETRA III and to continue and improve the experimental techniques presently carried out at DORIS III. DORIS III will stop operation end of 2012. On June 24, 2010 the first users workshop on a SAXS beamline for the PETRA III Extension was held at DESY. This workshop was very fruitful and many of its discussion results have been considered on the way to the present layout of the instrument. The most important are: 1. Use of a short undulator to obtain high photon flux at the sample. 2. Energy range 6 keV - 35 keV with focused beam. 3. Availability of a 20 m long experimental hutch to go for very high resolution experiments. 4. Highly flexible position for sample environment and detector(s), easy change between the setups by means of modular and automated components, separate preparation hutch to set up sample environment before measurements. 5. Option for measurements in transmission and reflection geometry. 6. Option for use of anomalous scattering 7. Option for simultaneous use of more than one detector. 8. Highly automated data acquisition. We are now planning a second workshop on this matter. It will provide an update concerning the project status but the major focus will be on technical and scientific issues related to the experimental area. The participants are encouraged to give short presentations addressing the scientific plans at the future instrument and the technical requirements for these experiments and the workshop is intended to discuss how the various requirements can be achieved within the extension project. The implementation of specific instrumentation has to be done in close contact with the user community and the requirements have to be expressed, motivated, and supported by means of project ideas from future users.
