Description
The absorption of polarized x-rays provides simultaneous insight into the magnetic and electronic properties of matter. The extreme sensitivity of this technique permits to study dilute magnetic systems with great detail, such as magnetic impurities in metallic and semiconducting hosts and metal-organic layers. We will present examples of x-ray magnetic dichroism measurements of such systems, focusing on recent investigations of correlation effects and magnetic coupling at molecule-metal interfaces. We will further show that the ability to detect small changes of the x-ray absorption cross-section allows one to investigate perturbative effects due to applied electromagnetic fields. We will discuss double-resonance experiments, where the simultaneous excitation of resonant transitions in the x-ray and microwave domain leads to the detection of magnetic resonance effects for different atomic species.
