GEM Test Beam Analysis

The aim of this hands-on exercise is to obtain the spatial resolution of the CMS GE1/1-III large area GEM detector, with the beam test data collected at Fermilab in Oct 2013.

The analysis can be done in two steps:

  • Select good events from each raw text data file, with the Script_ValidEventSelection.C script. Good event means the event we want to study. The event has reasonable signals in all trackers as well as in the CMS GE1/1-III GEM detector.
  • Calculate exclusive and inclusive residuals for the CMS GE1/1-III GEM, get both residual widths, then calculate the detector's resolution with the geometric mean method. The Script_GetResiduals.C will do this analysis.

The HV scan data on the eta-sector 5 of the CMS GE1/1-III GEM and the ROOT macros can be found in

naf-schoolXY.desy.de:/nfs/dust/cms/group/cups2014/handson/gem_tb

with XY being on of the workgroup server numbers mentioned in the account email. An introduction on how to use the scripts will be shown before the hands-on session, and the CMS GE1/1-III GEM detector will be introduced in a talk before this session as well.
