The idea for this series of courses was created in 2001 when the idea to build x-ray free-electron lasers became real with the proposal of X-ray FEL facilities for 0.1 nm radiation in Europe and in the U.S.A.. A first set of three courses was organized in the years 2001-2003. A fourth course was held in spring 2005.
